The Conservation of Shwenandaw Monastery

Organization: World Monument Fund
Project: Shwe-
nandaw Kyaung (Monastery) project

Being one of the most beautiful monasteries in Myanmar (Burma). The relocated Shwe-nandaw Kyaung is the only surviving wooden structure of King Mindon-Min’s palace complex, featuring a unique gilded interior with extensive and intricate woodcarvings, unrivaled in their intricacy.

The project aims at the conservation of the monastery and revitalizing its surrounding area, in addition to the capacity building of the local craftsmanship on conservation practice and site management; including traditional carpentry crafts, traditional timber framing, water damage treatment, protective measures against fire and others. It runs in partnership with the local communities and Myanmar's government.

The illustrations requested for the monastery highlights a part of the restoration process where the illustrations are used to explain the process for the local government and community. While the surrounding area visualization is used to explain the existing urban features and urban issues surrounding the monastery.
